How to Organise a Stag Do in Budapest

Organising a stag do in Budapest is rarely a destination problem. It is a best-man problem: twelve diaries, a budget nobody wants to say out loud, and slots that disappear while the group chat argues about a tank. The useful part is that Budapest is one of the easiest stag cities in Europe, if you do it in the right order.

The short answer

1. Lock a weekend and a headcount. Do not wait for a unanimous yes.
2. Say the budget per person out loud. Collect the money before you book.
3. Flights and a Pest apartment next. Those two move the bill the most.
4. One big activity a day. Tank or baths or Sparty, not all three stacked on Saturday.
5. Dinner and the night, then an airport van, then you stop managing it.

Step 1. Dates, numbers, budget

Before anyone sends a meme of a tank, you need three figures:

• A date range. A poll, not a novel. One or two weekends that work for most people. Unanimity will not arrive.
• A headcount. Even a range. Aim at ten or more. Group rates get kinder as the van fills.
• A number per person. This is the conversation groups dodge. Say a bracket early so nobody ghosts when the deposit is due.

Comfortable, excluding flights, is usually €400 to €550 a head for three days. Tight is €250 to €300. Flights from the UK add €100 to €200 if you book them like an adult. The groom's share is normally split across the group. Say that now, not at the airport.

Step 2. Pick the season on purpose

Not every month is equal. When to go is a whole article, but the organising version is short:

• April and May are the most booked. Lock them early.
• Summer is loud and hot. Mid-August is Sziget. Avoid that week.
• September and October are the ones we recommend to most groups.
• Winter is baths, cheaper flights, and a Sparty that feels earned.

From April to October, demand is highest. Freeze the weekend before you start designing the Saturday.

Step 3. Flights and beds, in that order

These are the two lines that vanish first and punish you if you leave them.

• Flights: Budapest is easy from London, Manchester, Dublin, Bristol. Cabin bag only if you can. One outbound for the whole group beats a drip of arrivals on Friday afternoon. Hold luggage for twelve lads is an activity you just cancelled.
• Beds: Pest, centre, District V, VI or VII. The where to stay guide is the longer version. A comfort apartment is €35 per person per night. A comfort hotel is €59.

The classic shape is Friday to Sunday, two nights. Two proper evenings, one headline activity, baths when people are wrecked. A third night gives you room for a Danube cruise or a slower Sunday.

Step 4. Collect the money before you book

The classic best-man hole is paying hundreds up front and chasing people until Christmas.

• Announce the per-person number with the groom already covered.
• Open a pot. Monzo, Splitwise, a shared tab. Put a pay-by date on it.
• Book when the money is in. Not before, not "I'll sort it and you owe me".

One kitty on the ground as well. Ten separate rounds is how the night gets away from you. That is in the cost guide for a reason.

Step 5. Book the one or two big things

The trap is four average activities and a group that is cooked by Saturday tea. One headline a day is enough.

• Tank driving: €85
• Széchenyi baths: €55
• Sparty: €85 (Saturday night, so the weekend has to include it)
• 7-gun shooting: €89
• A night in the ruin bars: cheap if you stay off hostess bars

Book the tank, Sparty and any VIP table first. Those go. The rest of the catalogue can follow. Or take a pack and stop building it from scratch.

Step 6. Night and logistics

• Do not crush Saturday. The groom has to exist on Sunday.
• Book the group dinner. Good rooms fill on Friday and Saturday.
• An airport transfer is €9 a head each way. A van for ten people with bags beats a taxi scramble at the terminal.
• Centre is on foot. Late hops are Bolt or Főtaxi. Never a street tout, never a hostess bar.

A timeline that holds

• 3 months out: weekend, headcount, budget. Flights and apartment booked.
• 2 months out: pot closed. Tank, baths or Sparty booked.
• 1 month out: dinners and the night locked. Transfers booked. Programme in the chat.
• 1 week out: one recap. Times, addresses, who has the keys, who holds the kitty.
• On the ground: you go out. The admin is already dead.

Best-man checklist

• Weekend agreed with the group
• Headcount confirmed (aim at 10+)
• Budget per person announced, groom covered
• Money collected before bookings
• Flights on the same outbound
• Beds in Pest, District V, VI or VII
• One headline activity booked
• Dinner and night planned
• Airport transfers booked
