Stag Do Budapest Cost: What You Should Really Budget

A stag do in Budapest costs less than almost anywhere else in Europe, and that is exactly why half of Britain ends up there. But the gap between a good weekend and a painful one is rarely the destination. It is the planning. Flights double overnight, rounds get out of hand, and one dodgy bar can eat a week's wages.

We run stag weekends in Budapest and Prague all year. So here are the real numbers: what each line costs, what a normal group actually ends up spending, and where the money quietly disappears.

The short answer

For three days and two nights, excluding flights, budget roughly:

• Tight: €250 to €300 a head (hostel, supermarket runs, one or two activities)
• Comfortable: €400 to €550 a head (central apartment, restaurants, baths plus a proper night out)
• No limits: €600 and up (premium beds, big-ticket activities, bottles in the club)

Add €100 to €200 for flights depending on how early you book, and that is your total. Everything below is priced in euros, which is what you will be quoted in, even though Hungary runs on forint.

Flights: the line that decides everything

Nothing else moves your budget this much. Book early and Budapest is cheap. Leave it late and you have paid for an extra activity before you land.

• Booked two or three months out, outside school holidays: €80 to €150 return from London, Manchester, Dublin or Bristol.
• Last minute, or on a bank holiday weekend: €200 to €250, sometimes worse.

Two habits that pay for themselves. Travel cabin bag only, because €40 each way for hold luggage across twelve lads is an activity you just cancelled. And fly out Thursday evening or Friday morning rather than Saturday.

When you go changes the bill

Budapest is not priced the same all year, and the gap is bigger than most groups expect.

• January to March: the cheapest window by a distance. Flights and beds drop, the baths are arguably better in the cold, and the city is yours.
• April to June and September: the sweet spot. Good weather, prices still sane, but you need to book six to eight weeks ahead because every other stag group has worked this out too.
• July and August: hot, busy, and the Sparty nights sell out first. Expect to pay more for everything.
• Bank holidays and December: flights spike hardest here. If your date is fixed and it lands on one of these, book the flights first and build the weekend around them.

If your dates are flexible, moving the weekend by a fortnight can easily save €80 a head before you have changed a single activity.

Where you sleep

The move in Budapest is one big apartment for the whole group. Usually cheaper than separate rooms, and far better for the weekend itself.

• City centre hostel: €35 per person per night
• Comfort apartment, central: €35 per person per night
• Comfort hotel: €59 per person per night

Stay in District VI or District VII, the old Jewish quarter where the ruin bars are. You walk home at 4am instead of arguing with a taxi driver, which saves more than the room ever will.

Food and drink

This is where Budapest pulls away from Amsterdam or Barcelona.

• Decent restaurant meal with a drink: €13 to €23
• Street food (langos, burger, kebab): €5 to €8
• Draught beer in a ruin bar: €4 to €6
• Beer or water from a supermarket: around €1

Breakfast at the apartment and a supermarket run before you go out is the single easiest saving of the weekend. Over three days and ten people it is real money, not pennies.

Activities: where the budget actually goes

One rule that never fails: one big activity a day, no more. Leave room for the hangover and for whatever the group decides at 2am.

Getting around

• Airport transfer: €9 per person each way
• 72-hour public transport pass: around €14
• Bolt, the local Uber, everywhere and cheap: €3 to €6 a ride across town

Never take a taxi from someone who approaches you at the airport. That is not a taxi.

A real example: eight lads, three days

Comfortable version, per person:

• Apartment, two nights: €70
• Airport transfers, both ways: €18
• Food and drink: €90
• Baths, cruise and tank driving: €175
• Buffer for rounds and whatever else: €50

That is €403 per person before flights, about €533 all in with a €130 return. Go tight on beds and activities and you are comfortably under €300 before flights.

What blows the budget

• Hostess bars. The classic Budapest scam. A very friendly woman invites you for a drink, the bill arrives at several hundred euros, and there is a doorman standing nearby. If someone stops you in the street to take you to a bar, the answer is no. Every time.
• Street and airport exchange. Terrible rates. Pay by card or withdraw from a real bank ATM, and walk past the blue Euronet machines.
• Buying rounds. Ten lads, ten rounds, you do the maths. One shared kitty from the first night solves it.
• Airport taxi touts and anyone quoting a flat fare in the tourist streets.
• Bank charges abroad. Tell your bank you are going, or bring a Revolut or Monzo card.
• Vague stag packages where nobody can tell you what is actually included until you have paid.

How to keep it under control

• One kitty, one person holding it. Splitwise or Monzo Shared Tab. Everyone sees the total, nobody fronts money for the group.
• Book activities before you fly. Cheaper, and the good slots are gone by the time you land.
• Ring-fence €50 a head for the unexpected. It always gets used.
• Agree the groom's share up front. The group usually covers him, so say so before anyone books.

What about Prague, then? On paper the two are close, and plenty of groups price both. Accommodation and activities land in the same bracket, so the real difference is rarely the total. Prague wins on the postcard old town and the beer culture, and it is compact enough to do everything on foot. Budapest wins on breadth: ruin bars you get nowhere else, the thermal baths, the Sparty, and a catalogue of activities that is simply longer. It is also the one groups ask us for most.
